Library Materials Selection Policies

While the legal responsibility for the purchase of all instructional materials is vested in the principal of Saint Louis School, the final responsibility for the selection of library materials is delegated to the professionally trained school librarian employed at the school. This person is charged with the responsibility of identifying, ordering, and organizing materials which implement, enrich and support the school's educational program which is to meet the needs, interests, goals and diverse abilities of the individual students.

The Saint Louis School library staff endorses the tenets set forth in the Library Bill of Rights and the School Library Bill of Rights of the American Library Association.

The library will provide a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty with due consideration for the diversity of appeal and various points of view. Therefore, the library media center will:

  1. Provide materials that support and enrich the curriculum taking into consideration the varied abilities, interests, values and maturity levels of the students served.
  2. Provide materials that stimulate growth in factual knowledge, develop literacy, cultural and aesthetic appreciation, and promote ethical standards.
  3. Provide materials that reflect the ideas and beliefs of many religious, social, political, historical and ethnic groups, thereby developing intellectual integrity.
  4. Place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in selection of materials in order to assure a comprehensive collection appropriate for the users.
